Garage Door Damaged
A garage door can look like a much bigger problem than it really is.

A broken spring can leave the whole door stuck. One bad roller can make it sound like the garage is coming apart. A dent from a car can make you wonder whether the whole door needs to go. Usually, it doesn’t.

At Affordable Garage Doors, we repair springs, cables, rollers, panels and openers, but we also replace garage doors when repairing the old one no longer makes sense. We deal with both situations, so we know there isn’t one answer for every damaged door.

The first thing to figure out is what is actually damaged.

When Is It Better to Repair a Garage Door?

Start with the part that failed. If the door itself is still straight and the other panels and hardware are in decent shape, replacing one worn or broken component is often all that is needed.

That could be:

  • A broken torsion spring
  • A frayed cable
  • Worn rollers
  • A damaged garage door or misaligned sensor
  • An opener problem
  • One garage door damaged panel
  • A door that has come off its track

For example, a door that has stopped working because of a broken spring does not suddenly become a bad door. The spring has reached the end of its life. Replace it and the door may have plenty of useful life left. If you want to know why this happens so often in colder months, read our post on why garage door springs fail in winter. The same goes for worn rollers or a damaged cable.

A panel is a little different. If your car backed into one section, we can often replace that section instead of the entire door. The catch is finding a panel that matches. Older models may no longer be made and a new panel can look different from the rest of the door if the original has faded over the years. You can see everything we handle on our garage door repair page.

What Does Garage Door Repair Cost?

There is no single garage door repair price because the job can be very different from one house to the next. A broken spring is one job. Replacing several damaged panels is another. The size and type of door, the part that failed and the amount of work involved all affect the final cost.

As a general reference, Affordable Garage Doors’ Alabama garage door repair cost guide uses 2026 national figures from HomeAdvisor. Those figures put typical repairs at around $155 to $379 with an average of about $265. The average replacement cost listed is around $1,223.

Those numbers give you an idea of the difference, but they should not be treated as a quote for your garage. A $265 repair can be a good investment when it fixes a door that otherwise has years left in it. It becomes a different conversation when you are spending that amount over and over again on the same old door.

When Does Replacing the Garage Door Make More Sense?

This is where the age and overall condition of the door matter. Suppose the door has one broken spring. Repair it.

Now suppose the same door has two damaged panels, worn rollers, a bent track and an opener that has started giving you trouble. You can keep replacing individual parts, but at some point you are putting money into a door that has very little left to give.

Look at the repair history, too. If you have already had someone out two or three times in the last year, add up those bills. That number can tell you more than the age of the door alone.

Replacement is also worth considering when:

  • The door is badly warped
  • Several panels are damaged
  • The frame or opening has shifted
  • Parts for the old door are no longer available
  • Repairs keep coming back
  • You want better insulation or a different style

An older door does not automatically need to be replaced. A 20 year old door with one bad spring may be perfectly worth repairing. A 10 year old door that has been hit, bent and repeatedly repaired may be a different story.

What Do Different Garage Door Problems Mean?

Some problems are easy to spot. Others are not.

  • The door suddenly feels very heavy: A broken spring is a common cause. Don’t keep trying to lift the door. The opener is not designed to carry the full weight of a door with a broken spring.
  • The door is crooked: A cable, roller or track problem could be involved. Continuing to operate it can make the damage worse.
  • One panel is badly dented: This may be a panel replacement rather than a full door replacement.
  • The door is noisy: Squeaking or grinding can come from worn rollers, loose hardware or other moving parts.
  • The opener runs but the door stays put: The problem may be with the opener mechanism, chain, gear or another component rather than the door itself.
  • The door has come off the track: This is one to leave alone. A technician should check the track, rollers, cables and door before putting everything back into position.

A noise or a damaged part does not tell the whole story. The rest of the system needs to be checked before deciding how much work is really needed. Our overview of the different types of garage door services explains what each kind of visit involves.

Don’t Ignore These Garage Door Problems

Some garage door failures are inconvenient. Others can be dangerous. A broken spring leaves the door much heavier than normal. An off track door can shift or fall. Neither is something you want to keep testing by opening and closing the door. If the door is visibly damaged or feels unsafe, leave it closed and have it checked.

The opener deserves attention as well. Safety sensors are there to stop the door from closing when something is in its path. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has documented deaths and injuries involving automatic garage doors and openers, which is why a faulty opener or safety sensor should not be treated as a minor repair.

What If You Decide to Replace the Door?

If the door has reached the point where replacement makes more financial sense, you have several options. Affordable Garage Doors installs Clopay and Amarr garage doors and can help you choose based on the look of your home, insulation needs and budget. Steel doors are a practical option for many homeowners. Clopay’s Modern Steel line, for example, comes in different construction and insulation levels.

If you like the appearance of a traditional carriage house door but do not want the upkeep of real wood, composite options such as Canyon Ridge and Coachman are worth looking at. Aluminum and glass doors, including Clopay’s Avante line, are another option if bringing more light into the garage is important.

And then there is real wood. It has a look that is difficult to reproduce, but it also needs more care, particularly in Alabama’s humidity. We also make sure the door selected for your home meets the applicable wind code requirements for the area. To see how these doors look on real homes, browse our photo gallery.

Can a New Garage Door Save Money Later?

Sometimes the savings are not in the initial purchase. A newer insulated door can make an attached garage more comfortable, which can matter during Alabama’s hot summers. You also start with new springs, rollers, panels and other components instead of continuing to replace aging parts one at a time.

If you are considering replacement but want to spread out the cost, financing options powered by Synchrony Financial are available, subject to approval.

How to Get More Life Out of Your Garage Door

You do not need to do much to keep a garage door in decent shape.

Have it inspected and tuned up regularly. Keep an eye on the rollers and hardware. And if the door starts making a new noise, becomes uneven or begins moving differently, don’t wait until it stops working completely.

Affordable Garage Doors offers annual tune ups and safety inspections, as well as planned maintenance for up to three doors and openers. Details are on our repair services page. A small repair is generally easier to deal with than a failed door that has been ignored for months.

Not Sure Whether Your Garage Door Needs Repair or Replacement?

That is exactly what an inspection is for. Affordable Garage Doors has served Alabama homeowners since 2007. We are family owned, licensed and insured and hold an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Our technicians can look at the door, find the source of the problem and explain whether repairing it is worthwhile or whether replacement would be a better use of your money. We serve Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Hoover, Vestavia Hills and nearby communities with local phone lines for each area.

FAQs

Does homeowners insurance cover a damaged garage door?

It depends on the policy and what caused the damage. Storm damage, a fallen tree or another sudden event may be covered, while normal wear and tear generally is not. Check with your insurance company before having the work done.

Can I replace just one garage door panel?

Often, yes. The main question is whether a matching panel is still available for your door. An older or discontinued model can make this more difficult and a new panel may not perfectly match a door that has faded over time.

Is a 20 year old garage door worth repairing?

Age alone does not answer the question. If the door is still in good condition and only needs a spring, cable, roller or opener repair, fixing it may be worthwhile. If the door is warped or multiple components are failing, replacement deserves a closer look.

Do I need a new opener with a new garage door?

Not always. A properly working opener may be able to stay in place. It should still be checked to make sure it is compatible with the new door and that the safety features are working correctly.

How can I tell if a garage door repair quote is reasonable?

Ask what failed, what parts are being replaced and how much the parts and labor cost. If you are being advised to replace the entire door for what appears to be one isolated problem, getting a second opinion is reasonable. Our FAQ page covers more common questions.
